Hand therapy position

We are pleased to announce an exciting opportunity for an Occupational Therapist with proven hand therapy and adult Neuro skills to join our team for a period of 6-9 months. A strong possibility exists that this position will become permanent.

A Diploma in hand therapy is an advantage but not essential.  The candidate must also be registered with HPCSA, SASHT, OTASA and have relevant medical protection cover.

The team consists of four Occupational Therapists and two practice administrators.

Our Hand therapy case load consists primarily of mild to severe trauma to the upper limb, as well as degenerative and repetitive strain injuries. The in-patient load will be divided between Neuro (which will include in-patient acute Neuro), Poly trauma ICU and burns ICU.


The skills required to be successful with this application are:


  • Assessment of the upper limb: history taking, ability to read and interpret X-Rays, perform a full clinical assessment (ROM, oedema etc.) and make differential diagnoses
  • Treatment: splinting, mobilisation, designing and sewing pressure garments, ADL and return to work activities, contact with employers as well as communication between allied health professionals and referring surgeons.



  • Assessment and implementation of acute in-patient treatment in neurology wards  and poly trauma ICU



  • Assessment and implementation of acute and long term in-patient treatment in burns ICU


The case load consists of both traumatic and non-traumatic injuries, Workman’s Compensation and private patients.

There will be a short period of mentoring prior to beginning the treatment of patients. The successful candidate will receive ongoing mentoring on a frequent basis.

With regards to the practice, patients are referred by: Plastic Surgeons, Orthopaedic Surgeons, General Practitioners as well as Casualty Officers from the relevant hospitals.

We have 4 locations spread between the North and South of Johannesburg.

Candidates will need to travel between the 4 practices

Post is to begin in JANUARY 2018 and will be a 6-9 month contract position with the strong possibility of a full time position thereafter.
